onQ™ Eliminates Time-Consuming Tape Management, Speeds Recovery and Reduces Company's Risk Window

Business Challenge:

Boulay, Heutmaker, Zibell & Co. (BHZ) had been using Symantec Backup Exec for years, but they were looking for a solution that would eliminate the labor-intensive tape management process, since the use of tapes required administrators to swap tapes in/out, restore data, re-catalog data, etc., resulting in significant time delays. With a mix of physical and virtual servers, BHZ needed an automated backup solution that offered a remote site option and the ability to quickly recover data in the event of a disaster

Solution:

After looking at several alternatives, BHZ chose the onQ Site Recovery Appliance from QuorumLabs and is now able to complete backup of its data repository (client info, audit files) within one hour compared to the 8 hours it took with Symantec. onQ also features a remote disaster recovery appliance, so if BHZ's main site goes down, employees can connect to their data and applications within the hour, versus the up to six days it took with the Symantec solution. In addition, onQ is the only solution that offers the ability to define granular backup image retentions times; other solutions' retention times are "hard set" and cannot be modified.

Business Benefits:

  • Speed of backup allows BHZ to do multiple backups (vs. one with Symantec solution) per day, shortening the company's "risk window."
  • Ease of manageability - onQ is completely automated, "I don't have to be hands-on. It frees me up to focus on other priorities."
  • Instant recovery - Data and applications are available to employees within the hour, as opposed to up to six days with the Symantec
